When should I actually start studying?

The honest answer most study guides won't give you: it depends on the exam, your difficulty level, and how many hours a day you can realistically focus. StartBy does the math for you — enter your exam date and get the last safe day to crack open the textbook.

How the study planner works

Pick what kind of exam you're studying for — pop quiz, midterm, final, or certification. Tell the calculator how hard the material is on a 1–10 scale, how much you've already covered, and how many free hours per day you can realistically dedicate. It works out the total hours of studying you'll need, adds a buffer for life happening, and tells you the last safe day to start. You'll also see a 'risky' date (start now or else) and a 'cooked' date (you're officially in trouble).

Why a planner beats guessing

Most people either start way too late (panic week before the exam) or way too early and burn out. A planner removes that anxiety by giving you a defensible start date — backed by hours, not vibes. It also accounts for the procrastination tax: the extra time real humans need vs. the fantasy version of themselves in a study guide.

What if I'm already behind?

For a normal college exam, 10–14 days of consistent studying (about 2 hours a day) is the sweet spot. For finals or certifications, 3–6 weeks. The exact number depends on how hard the material is, how much you already know, and how many free hours you have per day — which is exactly what the StartBy calculator works out.
How many hours of studying do I actually need?
A useful baseline: ~30 hours for a mid-difficulty exam, scaled up or down by difficulty and how much you've already covered. Multiply by 1.5x if you procrastinate, and add a 25% buffer so you finish before deadline night.
Is it too late to start studying?
Probably not. If you have at least half the hours you need in the days remaining, you can still pass — you just have to start today and grind. The calculator will tell you whether you're in the safe, risky, or officially cooked zone.
Should I skip weekends?
